I was looking for a replacement for VLC, and Nova came highly recommended. After trying it out over the last 6 months, I can definitely say it is no VLC. It has difficult time opening network storage, and UPnP support is completely absent. Trying to stream content from a network tuner is a complete no-go. It's a pretty good player if you have content on your device, and I love the ease of changing audio delay to compensate for Bluetooth latency. But I need to be able to access network streams.

Impressive video player if you have a personal collection. I've got it streaming from a Windows SMB share to Google TV where the app is installed. No need to set up and run a special video server program on the back end windows machine. Only weakness is that it won't use image-based PGS subtitles, even if they exist in, say, a streaming MKV file. It only sees srt subtitles. Though you can also get it to download subtitles from opensubtitle. But those can be hit or miss with regards to sync.

I really enjoyed using Nova for a couple of years now on my fire TV. There is a little bit of issues on scraping info but that's gotten better lately. However, the latest release as some serious buggy performance. Basically my videos start super slow, and I have to fast forward a few times until it starts to a normal speed. Even so, videos are always stuttering to the point where they're not enjoyable anymore. Using a shared hard drive connected to my router. Have no issues with others apps.
