Took half of my tax refund in Japan as fees. If you can, I recommend finding another shop that sells the same item that doesn't use Pie Vat. Many shops in Japan will just charge you the tax free price when you show your passport and you're done. The process for Pie Vat is also much more complicated and the app is buggy. Had to upload photos of my passport to the app, queue up again after purchase, just for the staff to scan my passport? Complicated and bloated process

Very time-consuming to set up an account. subsequent purchases should go better, but this system is far less user-friendly than the old system. On this same trip, our other purchases went through global blue, we showed our items, ID, and receipts at the airport, and had the money in our account 2 days later. just saying.

Thank you for the feedback! We are constantly looking to try to streamline the process and will try to make it more user-friendly and straightforward. We are keen on digitizing the whole process to eliminate paper and queues, as well as guaranteeing a higher refund rate! We look forward to serving you the next time you're abroad!

It's called the "Pie" app because an unknown third party in an unknown third country obliges you to give them sensitive personal data to get your tax back, then takes a percentage bite out of your tax refund. There are lots of retailers than don't do this. Also there's a button to "Withdraw" the refund claim. This makes no sense. It could mean you want to cancel the claim. Also could mean you want your money back - which was after all, the reason for the refund claim in the first place.
